AI in Further Education: Why Professional Judgement Matters More Than Software

I’ve been teaching full-time in Further Education for the past two years, and like many colleagues, I’m navigating increasing workload, assessment pressure, learner anxiety, and constant policy change.

Add AI into that mix, and it’s no surprise that fear has crept in.

But AI isn’t the crisis some make it out to be.
What it has really done is expose existing weaknesses in how we assess, support, and trust learners.

Generic written assignments were already vulnerable.
Internal verification was already stretched.
Some learners were already under disproportionate scrutiny.

AI didn’t cause these problems — it simply made them visible.

One of the most concerning responses has been the rapid adoption of AI detection tools. In real FE contexts — where learners may be neurodivergent, use assistive technology, or be learning in a second language — these tools are unreliable and risk undermining trust and fairness.

What FE has always relied on, and still should, is professional judgement:

  • triangulating evidence
  • designing contextual, applied assessment
  • having clear, shared boundaries around acceptable support

Ethical AI use doesn’t mean unrestricted use, but it also doesn’t mean prohibition. It means teaching learners to use AI transparently for planning, scaffolding, and support — not as a shortcut to bypass learning.

Handled well, AI could reduce staff workload, support inclusion, and strengthen assessment authenticity. Handled badly, it risks increasing surveillance, widening inequality, and pushing already stretched staff further towards burnout.

The future of AI in FE won’t be decided by software.
It will be decided by the values we embed around it.

Calm, fairness, and professional confidence will take us further than panic ever could.
